Your plastic surgeon will also discuss where your procedure will be performed.
Rhinoplasty may be performed in an accredited office-based surgical facility, a licensed ambulatory surgical center or a hospital. Be sure to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery and to stay with you for at least the first night following surgery.
Rhinoplasty starts with admission of anesthesia. This is followed by making of incisions which may be inside or outside the nose. In a closed nose surgery, incisions are made inside the nose while for an open nose surgery; the incision is made across the narrow strip that separates the nostrils (columella). Incisions make way for accessing the underling nasal structures after skin is raised. An overly large nose may be corrected by reducing cartilage or bone. Nose enlargement may require additional of grafts which may be synthetic or harvested from your nose cartilage, ear or rib. A deviated septum causing breathing problems may be corrected by straightening it and reducing projections in the nose for uninterrupted air flow. After contouring the nasal structures, skin is redraped and closed with sutures.
After surgery, you will have packing inside your nose and bandages outside your nose. You will notice some swelling on areas surrounding your nose. This will go away after a few days. Swelling on the nose may however persist for a year but it is usually worse in the morning and may be on and off. Your surgeon will prescribe pain killers, antibiotics and medication to apply on your nose. Your doctor may also recommend cold compresses to help reduce swelling. Rhinoplasty has prolonged recovery, after a year, your nose will have fully refined and incision scars will fade and remain invisible. Dr. Bloch will advise you to observe aftercare visits to ensure that you are recovering well.
The results of rhinoplasty are permanent, so it is important that you have clear aesthetic goals when this procedure is planned. Rhinoplasty should only be performed on a nose that has finished growing; complete development has usually occurred by age sixteen or seventeen. If rhinoplasty is performed before development is complete, continued growth can change the outcome of your surgery and cause potential problems and complications.
