Am I a good candidate for a facelift?

The following are some common facial characteristics that make you an appropriate candidate for a facelift:

    • Sagging skin in your midface and/or jawline
    • Deep creases extending from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds)
    • Lines extending from each corner of your mouth down your chin (marionette lines)
    • Facial fat (volume) that has fallen or is displaced
    • Sagging and loss of muscle tone in the lower face, resulting in jowls
    • A double chin, resulting from loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw
    • Creased and sagging skin in your neck

If you are in good general health, have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.

Facelift technique

Rhytidectomy procedure starts after you are sedated for your comfort and relaxation during the procedure. Next, your plastic surgeon makes an inconspicuous incision that runs along your hairline from one temple to the next. Skin is then lifted to free it from your face. Your surgeon can then work on your underlying tissues by positioning and tightening them with deep sutures. Extra fat is also removed. Areas that may be targeted in the facelift may include the forehead, mid-face or lower face to correct sagginess in jowls and neck. Skin is then redraped, contoured and excess trimmed. The incision is then closed with tiny clips, stitches or sutures. Drains may also be placed behind your ears. Heavy padding and bandages are then used to dress your incision. Rhytidectomy has various techniques; Dr. Bloch will use a method that is tailored to your condition and one that will give you a smooth recovery.

Facelift recovery

During your facelift recovery, a bandage might be placed around your face to minimize swelling and bruising once your procedure is completed.

Thin tubes may be present to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect under the skin.

You will be given specific instructions that may include how to care for the surgical site and drains, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the potential for infection, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health, and when to follow up with your plastic surgeon.

Be sure to ask your plastic surgeon specific questions about what you can expect during your individual recovery period.

    • Where will I be taken after my surgery is complete?
    • What medication will I be given or prescribed after surgery?
    • Will I have dressings/bandages after surgery?
    • When will they be removed?
    • Are stitches removed? When?
    • When can I wear make-up?
    • When can I resume normal activity and exercise?
    • When can I see my stylist for hair color and cut?

Does rhytidectomy have any risks?

Just like any cosmetic surgery, you can expect facelift to have some potential complications listed below:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Change in sensation
  • Hematoma
  • Unsatisfactory results that may necessitate revisional surgery

Most of these complications can be reduced if your procedure is done by a board-certified plastic surgeon and if you follow post-operative instructions. You should only sign the consent forms if you are willing to accept the benefits and potential risks of the procedure.
