Breast revision or implant replacement is correctional surgery done after a botched breast augmentation procedure. This cosmetic procedure is normally done to improve the appearance of breasts or to stop any health complications posed by saline or silicone implants. Breast revision involves the removal or replacement of implants through surgery. The most common complications that necessitate surgery include capsular contracture (hardening of tissue surrounding implants), implant rippling, breast asymmetry, rupture, change in nipple sensitivity, or signs of immune system disorders. The correctional surgery should be done by a board-certified plastic surgeon to minimize the chances of revisional surgery in the near future. Dr. Bloch is a world-class board-certified plastic surgeon from Chicago. The surgeons’ has an accredited facility called Body by Bloch where you can have a secondary breast surgery. You can arrange an appointment with the surgeon at www.bodybybloch.com.
Do I qualify for breast revision?
Breast implants will likely develop problems which your surgeon should discuss with you during your consultation. You might, however, consider breast revision surgery if you:
Apart from the above features, Dr. Bloch will consider you for breast implant replacement if you have a positive attitude towards the procedure and if you have realistic expectations.
(Your placement and incision options are similar to those associated with breast augmentation.) Depending on your preference and the doctor’s recommendation, an incision can be made in any one of the following places: the crease below the breast, around the areola, under the armpit, or, through the naval. He or she will remove the older or non-functional implants with new implants in the same area. Depending on a variety of factors, they can be placed directly under the chest muscle or directly under the breasts. Overall during breast revision surgery, your doctor should be cautious when placing the implant so that it will not have to be revised in the future.
Recovery
It is normal to experience pain on your breasts after anesthesia wears off. Prescribed pain medication will help you stay comfortable in your home recovery. Breasts will also not feel natural and they may be hard in the initial months of recovery. Your breasts will, however, soften up as time goes by. Dr. Bloch will advise you to minimize raising your hands beyond your armpit in the first few days following surgery to prevent tissue and muscle from separating. Drains will be removed within 2 days while stitches will be removed within 7 to 10 days after surgery. You can shower after 3 days, but you will be restricted from keeping your breasts in jacuzzi’s or swimming pools. After 1 to 2 weeks, you can resume work. It may, however, take about 6 or more weeks to take strenuous activities. Following your doctor’s instructions will give you a speedy recovery.
The original incision used to insert the implant is almost always the same one used to remove it; however, if you undergo a breast lift, elevating the position of your nipple and areola will result in breast lift scars.
