For people with weak chins or receding chins, chin augmentation or mentoplasty is the cosmetic surgical procedure that can be performed to improve their facial profiles. A weak chin may make you feel less confident about your looks. It makes any sagging skin on your neck to look worse and also makes the nose appear more prominent. Chin augmentation may only require an implant to be inserted into the chin bone and the muscles in front. But if the chin is too receding for an implant to correct it, a sliding genioplasty that involves cutting and manipulating the jaw bones may be necessary. Dr. Bloch is a board certified plastic surgeon and an expert who can examine you to determine the best option for your chin augmentation procedure. Patients should stop smoking and discontinue all medications containing aspirin or NSAIDs for two weeks prior to mentoplasty. If the surgeon is planning to make a submental incision, the patient should use an antibacterial facial cleanser for two days before surgery. Patients scheduled for an intraoral approach should rinse the mouth with mouthwash three times a day for two days before surgery. They should not eat or drink anything for eight hours prior to the procedure.
How the procedure is performed
X-rays of the face and chin are usually taken do determine the best options before your chin surgery is performed. The surgery is usually performed while you are placed under general anesthesia. If Dr. Bloch is going to augment your chin using a surgical implant, the incision will either be made on your mouth or outside under the chin. That creates a pocket between your chin bone and muscles where the implant is inserted and attached to the bone using screws or sutures. The incision is then closed using sutures. If a sliding genioplasty is the procedure agreed, you will also need to be placed under general anesthesia and the incision is made inside the mouth along your lower gum. The surgeon will access your chin bone and using a special bone saw will cut through the jaw bone, move it back and forth and secure it in place using screws or wires. Stitches are made to close the incision which will not leave any visible scars.
What to Expect After the Surgery
Immediately after surgery, the surgeon usually applies a dressing that will remain in place for two to three days. You will experience some tenderness. Post-operative discomfort can be controlled with prescribed medications. Chewing will probably be limited immediately after chin surgery, and a liquid and soft food diet may be required for a few days after surgery. Most patients feel a stretched, tight sensation after the surgery, but this usually subsides in a week.
Chin augmentation recovery time
Recovery time for mentoplasty will usually vary among individual patients. Following the instructions that Dr. Bloch will give you after surgery is important if you would like your recovery to be normal and faster. Most of the swelling can be expected to disappear after about 6 weeks. Normal activates can be resumed 10 days after surgery, but any rigorous activity should be avoided until after several weeks.
