Is Laser Liposuction Non Surgical?

If you want to get rid excess fat and tighten loose skin to improve the appearance of your cheeks, chin, neck, upper arms, abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, back, thighs, inner knee, calves, ankles and other areas of the body, laser liposuction is an option. Dr. Bloch at www.bodybybloch.com is a board certified Chicago plastic surgeon that performs laser liposuction and other aesthetic procedures that help patients achieve flat tummies, tight thighs and generally slimmer figures. It is understandable that many people want great results without necessarily having to opt for procedures that are extremely invasive.

How laser liposuction works

Laser liposuction or laser-assisted liposuction takes advantage of the power of laser technology to make the procedure less invasive. Traditional liposuction is a bit more invasive because in it involves making a small incision through which a thin hollow tube known as a cannula is inserted and then moved while inside the subcutaneous layer to liquefy fat deposits. With the laser liposuction technique, low energy waves are instead used to liquefy fat cells, but then the liquid fat is still suctioned out using a cannula inserted through a small incision. This modern procedure is therefore still a surgical one, but it can be considered less invasive compared to the traditional option.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

For certain individuals, diet and exercise will never get rid of stubborn pockets of fat. The following are some common reasons why you may want to consider liposuction:

  • You have a minimal amount of excess skin and good skin elasticity. Loss of skin elasticity with age can compromise liposuction results, but if your skin maintains elasticity, age alone is not a contraindication for liposuction surgery.
  • You have localized deposits of fat in your abdomen, arms, thighs and/or neck, which may be the result of heredity and do not disappear with exercise and diet.
  • You are physically fit, no more than 20 pounds overweight, and your weight is stable. If you are planning to lose a significant amount of weight or even gain weight (for example, due to pregnancy), this is not the time to undergo liposuction.

Laser liposuctions benefits

Perhaps the most important benefit associated with the laser liposuction technique is its skin tightening effect which is not achieved through traditional liposuction. The traditional option only targets to get rid of excess fat in trouble areas. Laser beams usually stimulate collagen and elastin fiber growth. During the healing process, a much smoother and firmer skin resurfaces on the treated areas. The treated areas will therefore benefit from a tighter skin in addition to the fat removed. Lasers are also believed to minimize bruising through coagulation of small blood vessels in treated areas. Laser liposuction is therefore the best option for areas with loose skin in addition to fat deposits that need removal.

Special considerations, risks and recovery

The most common potential complications of laser liposuction include:

  • Bruising
  • Infection
  • Minimal bleeding
  • Numbness
  • Skin burns
  • Swelling

Managing your discomfort: You’ll probably be sore and a little swollen for a few days following laser or ultrasonic liposuction.

Your doctor will provide painkillers to keep you comfortable. Your doctor may advise you to wear a special compression garment to speed healing. Everyone’s recovery is slightly different, but most people are able to return to work within a few days.
