If shaving, waxing or plucking are not proving enough in getting rid of your unwanted bodily hair, then you can consider laser hair removal. Lasers are effective devices that use pulsated energy to safely and effectively remove body hair. Lasers also save you from acne-like breakouts or razor bumps that are associated with traditional methods of hair removal. Hair removal with lasers requires multiple treatment sessions to completely get rid of your body hair. Your health care provider will set a treatment plan for based on your individual need. A certified dermatologist or physician should perform the hair removal treatment for you to ensure that you are safe. Many lasers can treat large body areas which include the:
As the hair regrows on these areas, treatments will b e repeated under your aesthetician guidelines.
Before laser hair removal, your technician will place protective eye shields on your eyes. Hair that needs to be removed will then be trimmed a few millimeters just above the skin surface. The laser equipment is then adjusted according to location, thickness and color of hair being treated. A cold gel will also be applied on your body area receiving treatment. This protects your skin and also allows the laser to penetrate your skin. Next, a beam of light from the laser equipment is directed on the area to be treated for some minutes. Your technician will use ideal settings and watch the treated area for any bad reactions. After the treatment is complete, you may experience some swelling and bruising. Your dermatologist will provide anti-inflammatory lotions or creams to ease the discomfort. Ice packs or cold water may also be used. Your next treatment session may be scheduled 4 to 6 weeks later. Treatments will be carried out until hair stops growing.
For a day or two afterward, the treated area of your skin will look and feel like it’s sunburned. Cool compresses and moisturizers may help. If your face was treated, you can wear makeup the next day unless your skin is blistering.
Over the next month, your treated hair will fall out. Wear sunscreen for the following month to help prevent temporary changes in the color of the treated skin.
Blisters are rare but are more likely in people with darker complexions. Other potential side effects are swelling, redness, and scarring. Permanent scarring or changes in skin color are rare.
