Liposuction – Get Rid of Stubborn Fatty Deposits

If you have always exercised and observed proper nutrition but have not managed to lose excess fat in some areas of your body, you might want to consider a liposuction procedure. This is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures performed to get rid of localized fat and contour the body into a more appealing slimmer shape. You can get your liposuction procedure done by Dr. Bloch, a highly experienced board certified plastic surgeon.

PURPOSE

Liposuction is intended to reduce and smooth the contours of the body and improve a person’s appearance. Its goal is cosmetic improvement. It is the most commonly performed cosmetic procedure in the United States. Liposuction does not remove large quantities of fat and is not intended as a weight reduction technique. The average amount of fat removed is about a quart (liter). Although liposuction is not intended to remove cellulite (lumpy fat), some doctors believe that it improves the appearance of areas that contain cellulite, including thighs, hips, buttocks, abdomen, and chin. A new technique called liposhaving shows more promise at reducing cellulite.

Am I a good liposuction candidate?

A good candidate for a liposuction procedure must be in good physical health. The procedure is not performed to address the problem of obesity, so you must be close to your normal weight. Since the procedure is performed to get rid of excess fat deposits, having no loose skin but good skin elasticity is important so that after surgery your skin can conform to new body contours. However, laser-assisted liposuction may be an option if you have loose skin in addition to excess fat. Use of lasers to assist liposuction can result to skin tightening during recovery. During your liposuction consultation with Dr Bloch, medical records must be reviewed and you must be examined to make sure you do not have any medical conditions that can increase the risk of surgery. The plastic surgeon also answers your questions and discusses with you all your cosmetic goals to make sure you have realistic expectations.

How is the procedure performed?

Liposuction is performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on the extent of incisions required, the number and parts of body operated, or the preferences of the surgeon. The surgeon makes small incisions through which a cannula is inserted, and then moves the cannula back and forth to liquefy fats. The fats dislodged are then suctioned into a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula. With advanced liposuction techniques, ultrasound or laser energy may be used to liquefy fats and avoid the trauma which can be caused by the back .and forth movements of a cannula.

What To Expect After Treatment

After the procedure, the area of the body that was treated is firmly wrapped to help reduce swelling, bruising, and pain. Elastic bandages and tape, support hose (such as those used to treat varicose veins), a special girdle, or another type of firm-fitting garment may be used, depending on which part of the body was treated. You may have to wear the compression garment or wrap for 3 to 4 weeks. Expect a lot of bruising and swelling for at least the first 7 to 10 days.
