Male Breast Reduction in Lake Forest

Male Breast Reduction in Lake Forest

Male breast reduction is a surgical cosmetic procedure that can be used to treat gynecomastia. This is a condition where male breasts abnormally enlarge. The condition can occur at any age. Main causes of gynecomastia include obesity, use of certain drugs, hormonal changes or hereditary factors. Enlarged breasts in men have excess localized fat, skin and excess glandular skin. This condition can occur on one or both breasts. Men with the condition usually suffer low self-esteem. To reduce the breast size, surgery is normally used and may be combined with liposuction to remove excess fat deposits. A board-certified plastic surgeon can perform the procedure for you. Your male breast reduction is performed by Dr. Bloch, a board-certified plastic surgeon. To schedule a consultation go to www.bodybybloch.com or call us at 847-432-0840.

Preparing for gynecomastia surgery

In preparing for gynecomastia surgery, you may be asked to:

    • Get lab testing or a medical evaluation
    • Take certain medications or adjust your current medications
    • Stop smoking
    • Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding

The success and safety of your gynecomastia procedure depends very much on your complete candidness during your consultation. You’ll be asked a number of questions about your health, desires, and lifestyle.

Male breast reduction surgery may be performed in an accredited, office-based surgical facility, licensed ambulatory surgical center, or a hospital. Be sure to arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery and to stay with you for at least the first night following surgery.

What is the technique for male breast reduction?

Reduction of male breasts is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Dr. Bloch will help you choose the ideal medicine for your comfort during surgery.

Techniques used may vary depending on your condition. If your enlarged breasts are as a result of excess fat deposits, liposuction alone may be used. In the procedure, your surgeon makes several small inconspicuous incisions on your breast. Through the incisions, a hollow tube called a cannula connected to a vacuum system is inserted. Your surgeon then moves the cannula back and forth to loosen the fat which is easily suctioned out by the help of the vacuum power through the tube. Liposuction employs different techniques depending on your condition. This will be defined by your plastic surgeon during your consultation.

Excision technique is commonly used in situations where male breasts are enlarged due to excess skin or glandular tissue. In the procedure, the areola may be reduced and the nipple may be moved to a higher level to create a more natural male breast contour. After surgery, breasts are dressed with gauze. Drains may be placed to remove excess fluids.

Recovery from surgery

After surgery, you will be provided with pain medication and antibiotics. Bruising and swelling will persist for several days or weeks. You need to stay away from any vigorous activities for the next 3 to 4 weeks. Your first return visit will be after a week where you will have your drains and bandages removed. Dr. Bloch will schedule your next return visit. You can resume work after 10 days. Incision lines will continue to fade as time goes by but will remain permanent. Your new male contour will have greatly improved after some months.
