Plastic Surgery in Chicagoland– Things You Should Know

Plastic surgery can help you improve your body parts for a more youthful and good looking profile. Surgery meant for aesthetic purpose is normally called aesthetic or cosmetic plastic surgery. Plastic surgery can also be done for reconstructive purposes after injury, disease or congenital factors. Whichever form of surgery you are planning to have, it is good to consider a board-certified plastic surgeon not only for good aesthetic outcome but also for your safety. Dr. Bloch who runs Body by Bloch is a board-certified plastic surgeon has a broad experience in plastic surgery. Consultation should be the very first step before going for plastic surgery.

Questions to consider before selecting your cosmetic surgeon

At this point, you may have narrowed your choices to one or two cosmetic surgeons. It is now time for the consultation. Here are key questions to consider:

    • What is the surgeon’s area of expertise?
    • Has the surgeon practiced for many years or performed many of these procedures?
    • Is the surgeon friendly yet confident and professional?
    • If the procedure will not be performed in the doctor’s office, does the surgeon use a certified surgical facility with board-certified anesthesiologists and up-to-date emergency equipment and anesthesia monitoring devices?
    • What is the total price of the surgery? (This includes the surgeon’s fee, operating room, anesthesia, and other charges.)
    • Are you allowed to see before and after pictures of other patients? Are computer images available for you and the surgeon to view together?
    • Does the surgeon encourage you to ask questions?
    • Are the surgeon’s answers to your questions realistic?
    • If a second surgery is needed, what is your financial responsibility?

What can plastic surgery do for me?

Cosmetic plastic surgery can improve a number of body areas with different complications. Common body parts corrected with plastic surgery include:

  • Face – to remove wrinkles, folds or acne scars
  • Eyes – to improve droopy upper eyelids and remove puffy bags under the eyes
  • Nose – to change or improve the shape
  • Ears – to reduce the size of large ears or set protruding ears closer to the head
  • Breasts – to increase or reduce breast size or restore sagging breasts
  • Upper arms – reshape saggy upper arms
  • Tummy – flatten flabby or bulging abdomen

Plastic surgery involves different procedures. Dr. Bloch will discuss your procedure in the consultation meeting.

Facility accreditation

Cosmetic surgery can safely be performed in a hospital, a surgicenter or an office-based surgical facility: Current published data show that accredited office-based facilities have a safety record comparable to that of hospital ambulatory surgery settings. However, the majority of office-based surgical facilities are not accredited. Another advantage of selecting an ASAPS member is that all ASAPS surgeons operate in accredited, state-licensed or Medicare-certified facilities.

Who qualifies for plastic surgery?

Your plastic surgeon will help you understand if you qualify for plastic surgery. Dr. Bloch will likely consider you for cosmetic surgery if you:

  • Are in good health
  • Are you a non-smoker – nicotine damages tissue and slows healing
  • Have realistic expectations and a positive attitude towards the surgery

Apart from these factors, your plastic surgeon will perform other medical tests and physical examinations to ensure that you are an ideal candidate for the surgical procedure. Your doctor may also recommend an alternative treatment to ensure that you have a fulfilling outcome.
